India's thrilling opening T20I match against New Zealand ended up costing the batters as they lost their wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan on Friday in Christchurch. The cricketer suffered a low-grade right adductor strain and will be unavailable for the second game in the five-match T20I series.
The Indian cricket team is currently on a roll, after posting the second-highest run chase in T20I history. However, they were left stunned to see Kishan walk out of the arena after the first T20I match in Christchurch. With a new opponent awaiting them in the second game, the Indian team management will have to make a crucial decision regarding the batting order.
Furthermore, the management will have to decide if they want to go with the same lineup or leave an opening for a new batter. The team will take on New Zealand in the second T20I match this Saturday at Hagley Oval.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on October 23 that Kishan had suffered a low-grade strain to his right adductor as he opened the innings in the opening T20I. The medical team will be on standby to monitor his recovery, but the wicketkeeper-batsman will have to wait for the second encounter.
Kishan struggled to find his rhythm in the series opener, scoring just one run after coming in at number five. His position in the order caused some raised eyebrows, with Tilak Varma promoted to number three as the clouds darkened over Kishan.
India eventually made the chase in style with four wickets to spare, recording their highest-ever successful run chase in men's T20I history. Despite the victory, Kishan's injury adds an unwanted twist for the visitors in the next match.
With the left-handed opener unavailable, India may have to re-examine their middle order, and whether a like-for-like replacement or a more attacking batter would be the preferred option for Christchurch.
Teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as a potential option for India in the second T20I. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak noted that one of the most important contenders would be in line to come into the playing XI should Kishan be unable to recover in time.
Sooryavanshi was included in the squad, but was not utilized in the opening match.
His inclusion could add another attacking left-handed batter to the mix, although the team management will have to consider how he fits in with the existing top order.A potential opportunity would also put the teenager in the spotlight in the context of a high-profile international series. However, his selection is not guaranteed, and India could opt for a different approach in accordance with their tactics.
Kishan's absence is notable, given the experience and attacking intent he brings to the T20I set-up.
He has recorded 1,955 runs in 67 T20Is at a strike rate of 148.55, and has been a potentially influential presence in the batting lineup. For the short term, his return to the series will be dictated by his recovery and the medical team's assessment. India will hope the injury does not hold him out of the series for any length of time, while the team management will have to find the right replacement for the second match.
With the series rolling into action after their historic chase, India's team selection will be the hot topic of discussion. Whether Sooryavanshi makes his mark, or the management selects a different option, it could provide the perfect insight into how they wish to balance aggression and stability throughout the series.
