MUMBAI: Mumbai's opener and newly-appointed vice-captain Ayush Mhatre, who suffered from a recurrence of his right hamstring (Grade 4 tear) injury recently, underwent surgery on Thursday at the at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital here, with India's sports orthopedic Mumbai-based surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala doing the job, TOI has learnt.

"Ayush underwent a 90-minute surgery for 'Hamstring Grade 4 tear repair,' for a recurrent injury on right hamstring. He was operated upon by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. He is comfortable and walking. He will be discharged today evening," a source tracking developments told this paper on Friday.

"He will be out of action for four months," the source added. It means that the 19-year-old batter is unlikely to play for Mumbai the remainder of the 2026-27 season.

Pardiwala has has helped some of the biggest names in in Team India (he has operated upon Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and many other top cricketers) and Olympic sports (Olympic medal winners Neeraj Chopra, Vinesh Phogat, PV Sindhu) to overcome injuries and return to match fitness.

The 19-year-old batter’s right hamstring injury recurred during Mumbai's innings and 155 run win over Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium in their opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season.
Mhatre suffered the injury while taking a run on Day One during his 48-run knock in the first innings.

The talented teenaged batter underwent rehabilitation for injuries to both his left and right hamstring for almost three months at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, after being ruled out of action due to the injury from the second half of IPL-2027 while playing for the Chennai Super Kings .

The injury is a big setback for Mhatre, who had just been named as Siddhesh Lad's deputy for the Ranji Trophy by the Mumbai selectors.

The top-order batter had previously suffered a left hamstring injury while playing for Chennai Super Kings, which ruled him out of action for almost the last five months, and forced him to miss the T20 Mumbai tournament in June, the India A tour to Sri Lanka, followed by the Duleep Trophy in Aug. He then suffered a right hamstring injury too, which delayed his comeback.

When he first suffered the injury on April 18, during CSK’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mhatre was CSK’s leading run-scorer in the tournament with 201 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 177.87.
