India‘s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand will provide an exciting opportunity for the visitors to test their bowling strength in challenging conditions. With the opening match scheduled for Thursday (October 22), veteran Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar could emerge as a key figure, particularly if the early-season pitches offer assistance to seam and swing bowling.
Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond believes Bhuvneshwar’s experience, ability to exploit movement with the new ball and composure under pressure could make him a significant threat to the Kiwi batters. The experienced seamer has returned to India’s T20I setup after nearly four years away from the international side and will be eager to make the most of his opportunity.
Shane Bond highlights how Bhuvneshwar Kumar can trouble New Zealand batters
Speaking to IANS in an exclusive conversation, Bond expressed his happiness at seeing Bhuvneshwar back in the international circuit. The former Black Caps pacer highlighted the Indian bowler’s consistent performances over the years, particularly in the Indian Premier League (IPL)and explained why his presence could prove valuable for the team.
Bond believes that Bhuvneshwar offers more than just his bowling skills. His calm temperament and experience in high-pressure situations provide reassurance to the other bowlers, especially when matches reach their decisive stages. The former New Zealand international also pointed out that having a senior bowler who understands how to handle difficult moments can make a considerable difference in T20 cricket.
“It’s great to see Bhuvi back in the international circuit. He’s a great bowler and has been so good in the IPL for so long. What it’s like to have someone like him in the team is just a calming influence. He’s bowled in big moments so often and always is a man who looks up for it and always looks calm and composed in those moments,” said Bond.
Notably, Bhuvneshwar has built his reputation on his ability to move the ball both ways, making him particularly dangerous during the opening overs. If New Zealand’s conditions provide sufficient swing and seam movement, the right-arm pacer could put the home batters under pressure early in their innings.
Bond also emphasised the importance of having an experienced campaigner in the bowling attack during the death overs. In T20 cricket, where a few deliveries can dramatically change a match, the ability to remain composed and execute plans under pressure is essential.
According to Bond, Bhuvneshwar’s familiarity with high-stakes situations makes him a dependable option for the Indian captain. His experience could help India manage difficult phases while providing guidance to younger members of the bowling unit. He also expressed his eagerness to watch the Indian pacer operate in conditions that could favour swing and seam bowling.
“It’s always nice to have a senior bowler in your team, particularly in those death overs where, alongside the captain, you can lean on him. So, he’ll be stoked and deserves his chance back in the team. I’m looking forward to watching him bowl, particularly in conditions that might swing and seam because he can be lethal with the new ball, let alone being a quality finisher,” added Bond.
Bhuvneshwar eyes a strong return against New Zealand
Bhuvneshwar’s return to the national T20I squad follows a prolonged absence from international cricket. He recently featured in the washed-out series decider against the West Indies in Bengaluru, marking his return to the setup.
His impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL also strengthened his case for selection. The franchise’s success in securing consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026 further underlined the value of his contributions during crucial moments.
The New Zealand tour now presents Bhuvneshwar with an opportunity to demonstrate that his experience and bowling skills remain valuable at the international level.
