When Indian cricket finds itself at a crossroads, the limelight is always on the men in white and blue on the field. But while the Indian team prepares for a crucial year, with a World Cup (ODI) in 2027 on the horizon and the qualification for the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2025-27 in the balance, the real work begins far away from the stadium.
On October 19, the veteran off-spinner of the Indian team, Pragyan Ojha, was elected the Chairman of the Senior Men's Selection Committee by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The former India left-arm spinner climbed rapidly up the ranks after his appointment to the post last year.
Instead of appointing someone external to the system like many feared would happen as chief selector Ajit Agarkar left the post, the new committee gave the prestigious post to Ojha, the senior-most member among the current selectors on the basis of his years of playing experience. To complete the three-member panel, the West Zone representative, Ramesh Powar, was also added. But the bigger story perhaps is that Pragyan Ojha will serve as Indian cricket's troubleshooter in chief.
The exit of Ajit Agarkar as chief selector was anything but smooth.
Tempers frayed as the new generation was being ushered in and the old guard was being pushed out, with tempers flaring up in the dressing room, management, and the selectors themselves.Yet Ojha was able to act as a pacifier in the mix-up, partly because he retired just last February, and partly because he knew the game from within, having played alongside the team's senior members.
He made his debut in 2008, when Virat Kohli was just about to enter the scene, and he spent the years with Kohli and Rohit Sharma till his retirement in 2013.
This standing in the team has proven to be invaluable in the last year, when his experience as a cricketer and an administrator came together to help the team's dynamics get back on track. As reports show, Ojha was the man to turn to when the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir and the star batsman Virat Kohli began to have complications on the field.
“Ojha was the intermediary when the communication channels had broken down,” the report stated. And indeed, his experience in the game and proximity to the senior players meant that he could effectively act as a pacifier to Kohli, allowing others to breathe easier.
The fans got to see it happen in real life when videos surfaced on social media of Ojha talking things out in length with Kohli at the Ranchi airport during the recent South Africa series, as well as private talks with Gambhir and Sharma. All the while, Ojha worked behind the scenes to keep the team's morale up and its dynamics intact.
Ojha's rise to power is the result of a close call. Now the BCCI has been looking for a chief selector for some time, after Agarkar's contract expired this month.
When the position of chief selector was announced, Ojha was the first one to step up and take on the role of interim chief selector. He has since led the meetings for the selection of the squad for the upcoming multi-format series against New Zealand in 2026. His performance in these meetings was so effective that it reassured the board that he would be the one to lead them through the most difficult task.
