According to a Cricbuzz report on October 17, the board’s logistics team shared this information via WhatsApp message. Several franchises confirmed receiving the message.

According to the report, the message mentioned a player auction on December 16, 2026, at the ITC Grand Goa, and an auction briefing on December 15. Initially, no formal email was sent to franchise owners and CEOs. Later, the Hindustan Times, quoting BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, confirmed the December 16 date.

IPL auction will return to India after three years

This time, the IPL player auction will be held in India. Previously, the auctions for three consecutive seasons were held abroad. Players were auctioned in Dubai in 2023, Jeddah in 2024, and Abu Dhabi in 2025. Now, Goa has been selected as the venue.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced in September that the auction would be held in Goa in December. This upcoming event will be a mini-auction, allowing franchises to fill the vacancies in their teams by purchasing players as per their needs.

Auction briefing will be held on December 15

According to reports, a pre-auction briefing for franchises is scheduled for December 15th. This will provide teams with information regarding the auction process and necessary arrangements. The logistics team has contacted franchises to plan their travel and accommodations.

Meanwhile, teams must also complete preparations to player retention and release. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, franchises must submit a final list of their retained and released players by November 15, 2026. This list will provide a clearer picture of the teams’ needs and available budget.

The date may also clash with the India-Sri Lanka ODI match.

The date of December 16th is also in the news because, according to the current schedule, the second match of the ODI series between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to be played on that day in Bengaluru.
