NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have mutually decided to part ways after a disappointing 2026 Indian Premier League season. The five-time champions won only four matches and are now preparing to appoint a new coach.

Reports suggest the franchise has shortlisted several candidates, with interviews expected next week. Jayawardene is also unlikely to take up another role within the organisation.

Jayawardene leaves behind an impressive record, having guided Mumbai Indians to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. He later worked as the franchise’s global head of performance from 2022 to 2024 before returning as head coach in 2024. Mumbai reached the playoffs in 2025 but finished ninth in 2026.
