Mohammed Shami, who hasn’t played international cricket since 2025, has dismissed fitness concerns as he looks to return to the Indian National Cricket Team amid the ongoing 2026-27 Ranji Trophy. The 36-year-old took 4 wickets for Bengal in their match against Delhi.
The discarded pacer picked up seven wickets in the semi-final and final of the 2026 Duleep Trophy, helping East Zone win the silverware. He was last seen in action for India during the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has been impacted by injuries and was out of the side for a long time after the 2023 ODI World Cup. His chances of representing the Men in Blue are almost over, considering the approach of the current selection panel.
He was asked about his fitness after Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy match between Bengal and Delhi.
“You can see my fitness and write about it. You are watching me in action. What will happen if I start talking about myself? I am on the ground to play cricket, and I am playing wherever I can. My job is to bowl,” he said.
Shami’s brilliance with the ball helped Bengal restrict Delhi to 240 in the first innings.
Mohammed Shami also opened up on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the national side for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Shami believes the 36-year-old should have been picked much earlier, considering his performances and skills.
Bhuvi last played for India in 2022 on the tour of New Zealand.
“He should have been picked a long time ago. He doesn’t talk much, but you can’t ignore a talent for a long time. It is good for him that he is back in the team. He has been bowling well and taking wickets for the last two years in the IPL, and he deserves it. He is coming back after a long time. If someone has potential and is working hard, why shouldn’t he play for the country?” Shami said.
In IPL 2026, Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 28 wickets for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and helped the team win their second consecutive title.
