Indian captain Shreyas Iyer has set a new record in T20 cricket history, surpassing legendary former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. With India’s impressive victory against the West Indies in the third T20I at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, Iyer became the first captain in the world to achieve this unprecedented feat.
Batting first in the Indore T20I, India posted 223 runs. This marked the 37th time Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy as his teams (national and franchise) scored 200 or more runs in T20 cricket. He surpassed former Indian captain MS Dhoni’s record (36 times) to become the number one batsman. Iyer achieved this feat in significantly fewer matches than Dhoni. Virat Kohli is third on the list with 29 times.
In the third match of the 5-match T20I series, India defeated West Indies by 14 runs in a thrilling match and took a 2-1 lead in the series. In reply to India’s 223 runs, West Indies team could only score 209 runs for 7 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Opener Abhishek Sharma played a stormy inning of 69 runs in 30 balls, while Ishan Kishan contributed 37 runs. In bowling, fast bowler Arshdeep Singh took 3 wickets for 44 runs and stopped West Indies from reaching the target. The fourth match of the series will be played in Hyderabad on 14 October.
