Veteran Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set to make his much-awaited return to international cricket after nearly four years, following his selection for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has now explained why the experienced pacer could be an important addition to the squad, highlighting his impressive Indian Premier League (IPL) performances and the value of experience in international cricket.

Bhuvneshwar’s selection has attracted considerable attention, particularly because India have several promising young fast bowlers competing for places in the national team. However, his consistent performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) over the last two IPL seasons have strengthened his case for a comeback.

Sitanshu Kotak explains why Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back in India’s T20I squad

Speaking ahead of India’s second T20I against West Indies in Ranchi, Kotak suggested that the absence of jasprit bumrah during India’s recent assignments had highlighted the importance of having experienced bowlers in the team.

Reflecting on India’s bowling struggles in England, the batting coach said:

“One thing is obviously with the selectors, but I can give you an answer based on what I think. In England, I personally felt that with Bumrah not being around and a lot of young bowlers playing, you can’t beat experience. The young bowlers are good; they are performing well and getting selected, but at some stage you also need some experience.”

Kotak’s comments underline the potential importance of Bhuvneshwar’s return as India prepare for another challenging international assignment. While the younger bowlers have earned their opportunities through strong performances, an experienced campaigner can offer valuable guidance in high-pressure situations.

Experience alone has not secured Bhuvneshwar’s recall. His performances for RCB during the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons have also played a major role in bringing him back into the national conversation.

The right-arm seamer claimed 17 wickets in IPL 2025 before producing an outstanding campaign in 2026, finishing with 28 wickets. His contributions helped RCB win consecutive IPL titles and demonstrated that he could still deliver consistently at the highest domestic level.

Explaining the other possible factors behind the selection, Kotak added:

“Another thing is that Bhuvneshwar has been doing really well in the IPL for the last two seasons. So the selectors must have thought that, for New Zealand conditions and all, obviously he has been doing well and we need some experience.”

Bhuvneshwar Kumar eyes a fresh chapter with India

Bhuvneshwar’s ability to swing the new ball, control the powerplay and execute variations in the death overs could make him a valuable option for India in New Zealand. His experience in international cricket could also help the team’s younger bowlers manage difficult phases of a match.

Bhuvneshwar last represented India in November 2022, making his upcoming New Zealand assignment a significant opportunity to revive his international career.

At 36, the experienced pacer will be expected to combine his skills with the knowledge gained from years of international cricket. His recall also sends a message that strong domestic and IPL performances can bring experienced players back into contention.

For India, the challenge will be to balance youthful energy with proven experience as they prepare for the five-match T20I series. If Bhuvneshwar can reproduce his IPL form in international cricket, his comeback could prove valuable for the team’s bowling attack.
