The return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the Indian T20I squad has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the team’s upcoming tour of New Zealand. The star Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer has earned a recall after nearly four years, and his wife, Nupur Nagarhas also become part of the buzz surrounding his comeback.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member squad on Tuesday, with Bhuvneshwar making a surprise return to the national setup. India will play five T20Is against New Zealand from October 22 to November 1.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s wife reaction goes viral

Nupur ’s reaction to her husband’s India recall quickly attracted attention from cricket fans online. Her response with sticker ‘Gratidão’ carried extra significance given the difficult journey Bhuvneshwar has experienced since his last international appearance.

The fast bowler has been away from the Indian team since November 2022, when he last played against New Zealand. During that period, there were questions about whether he would ever wear the India jersey again.

His return is therefore more than just another selection. It represents the reward for several seasons of persistence, particularly after his outstanding performances for RCB.

Nupur has remained a steady presence during Bhuvneshwar’s career, especially through periods when his international future was uncertain. The pacer himself previously acknowledged the important role his family played while he came to terms with being overlooked by the selectors.

Bhuvneshwar’s RCB form forced selectors to take notice

The biggest reason behind Bhuvneshwar’s India comeback has been his remarkable form in the IPL.

After joining RCB, the experienced seamer became an important part of the franchise’s bowling attack. He picked up 17 wickets in IPL 2025 and followed it with an even more impressive 28 wickets during the 2026 season. His contributions helped RCB win back-to-back IPL titles.

That consistency made it increasingly difficult to ignore his credentials for a national recall.

Bhuvneshwar’s greatest strength remains his ability to move the ball and operate effectively in different phases of a T20 innings.

He can use swing with the new ball and rely on experience and variations when bowling at the death.

Former India and RCB’s batting coach Dinesh Karthik also backed the selection, highlighting Bhuvneshwar’s ability to swing the ball both ways and handle pressure at the death.

The comeback becomes even more remarkable considering what Bhuvneshwar felt after India’s 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal defeat to England in Adelaide.

The pacer recently revealed that he had told Nupur that he believed the tournament would be his last World Cup for India. He felt the selectors would naturally begin planning for the next cycle after such a disappointing exit.

Yet, nearly four years later, Bhuvneshwar has another opportunity.

The 36-year-old has previously insisted that he was not desperately waiting for an India recall and was simply focused on enjoying his cricket. His IPL performances, however, eventually put his name firmly back into the selection conversation.
