Delhi Capitals (DC) have made a major change to their coaching setup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with a former India captain set to take charge as the franchise’s new head coach. The appointment comes after the team finished sixth last season and continues its search for a first IPL title.
The new head coach has a long association with the Delhi Capitals franchise and also brings recent coaching experience from the SA20. He will replace Breathe Dancerswho held the position for the previous two seasons.
Former India captain returns to Delhi Capitals coaching setup
Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the new head coach of Delhi Capitals, replacing Badani in the role. Ganguly has been associated with the franchise since 2019, when he initially joined as an advisor before becoming Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams. More recently, Ganguly served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals and guided them to the SA20 final earlier this year.
His return to Delhi now gives the franchise a coach with extensive experience across international cricket, the IPL and franchise management. Ganguly said he was looking forward to taking on the role and highlighted his strong relationship with the franchise. He also expressed his desire to work with the squad and build a strong and fearless team.
New coach faces first major decisions ahead of IPL 2027
The appointment comes with the immediate challenge of ending Delhi Capitals’ wait for their first IPL title. The franchise reached the final in 2020 and topped the points table in 2021, but has not qualified for the playoffs since then. The JSW group will manage the Capitals for the next two years under the franchise’s split ownership model.
The new coach will also inherit a reshaped Delhi Capitals squad, with Rishabh Pant returning to the franchise while Kuldeep Yadav has moved to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). JSW Sports founder Parth Jindal backed the appointment and said the new coach’s leadership and experience could help the team mount a stronger challenge for the title.
