Delhi: After the third match of the recently concluded three-match ODI series between India and West Indies, both the teams have been fined. In this match played in Mullanpur, both the teams could not complete their overs in the stipulated time. Due to this, a fine of 20 percent match fee has been imposed on the Indian team and 10 percent fine on the West Indies.

Why was India fined more?

After taking into account the time relaxation, the West Indies team was found to be two overs short. The team played its entire innings of 50 overs, but fell behind by two overs during bowling in the stipulated time.

The Indian team remained behind by four overs. West Indies, chasing India's target of 352 runs, ended the match in just 48.2 overs. Despite this, the Indian team was four overs short as per the scheduled time.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, a fine of 5 percent of the match fee is imposed on each over for slow over rate. Under this rule, 20 percent fine was imposed on India and 10 percent fine was imposed on West Indies.

Captains accepted punishment

In this case, allegations were made by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madangopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Sharafuddaula and fourth umpire Virendra Sharma. Match referee Prakash Bhatt sentenced the fine. Indian captain Shubman Gill and West Indies captain Shai Hope accepted this punishment. Therefore, there was no need for a formal hearing in the matter.

This is West Indies' second over-rate penalty in the last three months. Earlier, in the last ODI against New Zealand in July, the team was fined 5 percent. Earlier, India was fined 10 percent for slow over rate in Raipur ODI against South Africa in December 2025. Now both the teams will face each other in a five-match T20 series from October 6. The first match of the series will be played in Lucknow.
