Former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has shown the world that age doesn’t matter and he is still a master when it comes to the white-ball format. The 39-year-old scored an impressive 101 off 76 balls in the second IND vs WI ODI on Wednesday in Guwahati.

This was his 35th ODI, and he also went past 12,000 runs in the format, becoming the seventh man to do so. On Saturday, the veteran Indian star has a chance to join an elite list.

Rohit is just two runs short of becoming the fourth batter to score 10,000 runs as an opening batter. The batter has opened in 201 innings and amassed 9998 runs at an average of 54 and a strike rate of 96. He has also hit 33 centuries, 49 fifties, 991 boundaries and 350 sixes at the top of the order.

Most runs as an opener

Sachin Tendulkar – 15310 runs in 340 innings

Sanath Jayasuriya – 12740 runs in 383 innings

Chris Gayle – 10179 runs in 274 innings

Rohit Sharma will become the fastest men’s cricketer to score 10,000 runs as an opener if he gets to the mark on October 3. The veteran star will be batting in his 202nd innings, putting him well clear of Tendulkar, who got to the mark in 214 innings.

It is to be noted that India’s star batter began his journey as an opener in 2011 in South Africa, scoring 29 runs from three innings. He assumed the role on a full-time basis in 2013, when he formed a famed partnership with Shikhar Dhawan for close to a decade.
