Brendon McCullum has laid out his vision for England's white-ball cricket following a decision to switch his focus to the shorter formats. The former all-format coach had been handling the responsibilities of managing the Test and white-ball teams, but the reshuffling in the English Cricket setup has given him a chance to focus only on the limited-overs teams.

McCullum said that he had been okay with handling the dual roles before, but the changes have meant his focus is now on trying to make this side the best white-ball team in the world.

“It (doing both roles) was fine.

Change happens; my focus is on how to make this side the best white-ball team in the world,” McCullum was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Brendon McCullum aims to build a team with an identity in both ODI and T20I. England may be on the up, but the coach believes there is a long way to go before reaching the standard he has set.

“We're not there yet. We've got a lot of growth within us and a lot of improvement to make. But I want us to be the strongest, fastest and most robust cricket teams in the world, and one that can play at a high-octane pace,” McCullum said.

The England coach's emphasis on pace, intensity and aggression is a sign of how he wants his team to be playing. And rather than simply focusing on results, McCullum is looking to create a unique identity that can cut through both limited-overs forms of the game.

England's white-ball campaign during the 2026 home summer was a pointer to how far they have come under McCullum and captain Harry Brook.

England swept Sri Lanka 3-0 in their T20I series before securing a 2-1 victory in the ODI series.

The side also kept up a good record in their 50-over assignments during 2026, laying an effective groundwork for McCullum's ambitions.

The coaching set-up has also been enriched as former England batsman Kevin Pietersen joins the white-ball program as a mentor. His presence should help McCullum as he looks to develop his high-octane style of play with the squad.

With his responsibilities now limited to white-ball cricket, McCullum has the opportunity to pay closer attention to England's ODI and T20I teams and develop the high-intensity style he believes can take them to the top.
