Sophie Molineux will miss Australia women’s ODI series against Bangladesh due to a hip injury. Tahlia McGrath will lead the side in the three-match series, starting October 9 in Brisbane.

Molineux suffered the injury after returning from The Hundred, leaving her with insufficient time to recover ahead of the ODI series. Australia selector Shawn Flegler, however, is hopeful she will be fit for the T20I series.

“She’s now turned a corner, but I think it’s too tight for the ODI series … but she’ll be right for the T20 games (and) we’ll keep assessing her during that particular series,” Flegler said.

If Molineux does not recover in time for the T20I series, starting October 18, Ashleigh Gardner will lead Australia for the first time.

“We’ve got Ash and T-Mac as (co-)vice-captains and it’s been endorsed by the board for either one of them to step up into the role. Tahlia’s done a really great job in the past, and if Ash gets that opportunity (in the T20s), I’m sure she’ll do a great job as well.

“Soph will be on tour with us anyway, so I can see that leadership group performing really well. They function really well as a group,” Flegler said.

Apart from Molineux, Lucy Hamilton and Darcie Brown are also out of the ODI series due to quad and back injuries, respectively. Hamilton, though, has been named in the T20I squad.
