The former Indian cricketer Mohit Sharma is set to join Chennai Super Kings as the team’s new bowling coach.

The 38-year-old has played four seasons for CSK and will be taking over from Eric Simmons, who served in the role under former head coach Stephen Fleming.

According to some reports, Mohit is set to sign a deal with the five-time champions and will be the first change in CSK’s support staff for the upcoming 2027 season.

“Zaheer is in the process of finalising the support staff. He seems to have zeroed in on Mohit for the bowling coach role. That is my understanding,” said CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.

Mohit Sharma has played eight T20Is for India, last made an appearance in the IPL 2025 season before announcing his retirement from all forms of the game in December last year.

Mohit Sharma has played a total of 34 matches for India, 20 of which came under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. He made his CSK debut during IPL 2012 and played three seasons, returning with 57 wickets.

Other than CSK, he has also played for Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals.

He has played 48 times for CSK in the IPL, with 10 more appearances across two seasons of the now-defunct Champions League T20.

Making his retirement from professional cricket in December last year, Mohit Sharma said, “Today, with a full heart, I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing.”

“A very special thanks to the Haryana Cricket Association for being the backbone of my career. And my deepest gratitude to Anirudh Sir, whose constant guidance and belief in me shaped my path in ways words cannot express.”

Meanwhile, CSK is also hunting for a batting coach for the 2027 season. Michael Hussey, who was also understood to be in the running for the head coach role, has served as batting coach until the 2026 season.
