Punjab Kings is unlikely to renew Trevor Bayliss’ two-year contract and opts to look for a new Indian coach before the next edition of the IPL.
After Australian coach Ricky Ponting stepped down as Delhi Capitals head coach, PBKS is also looking for a new coach ahead of next season. At this point, it remains uncertain whether the franchise chose an Indian coach remains to be seen, but they are considering various options for the role. Out of them Sanjay Banger who has worked previously with the franchise could be a potential candidate.
According to reports, a decision was to be taken at the board which was scheduled for July 22 but the meeting did not take place. The franchise is set to expand their search ahead of the mega auction later this year.
With the improved performances from Indian coaches like Rahul Dravid who led the national team to the T20 World Cup, Gambhir and Chandrakant’s successful partnership with KKR last season, and Ashish Nehra’s work with Gujarat Titans. Additionally, Sourav Ganguly’s influential role at Delhi Capitals and Dinesh Karthik named as RCB’s head coach has gained expectations on the head coach.
However, Bayliss, 61 has had stints with three different franchises, KKR, SRH, and PBKS along with a successful chapter leading the England team. But, Punjab Kings are yet to finalize their call, pending further review of last season’s performance.
Bayliss’ record in the T20 tournament has been less than stellar, raising questions about his suitability for the role. Punjab Kings finished in eighth and ninth in the past two seasons under his leadership despite a well-promising squad.
He succeeded Anil Kumble ahead of the 2023 season, but could not reach the required result. According to some sources, Rahul Dravid has attracted offers from multiple franchises. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are rumored to have their eyes on Mark Bouchier.
With Ashish Nehra and Vikram Solanki combo also remains uncertain while all eyes are on Kolkata Knight Riders about their new coaches after the exit of Gambhir, Abhishek Nayar, and Ryan ten Doeschate from the franchise to the Indian team.
