David Miller and Temba Bavuma scored centuries to help South Africa secure a 32-run win in the second ODI. The host nation has clinched the series with their second consecutive victory. The Aussies once again struggled against the spinners. Miller amassed 142 off 93 balls to post his eighth ODI century, while Bavuma managed 103, his sixth hundred in the fifty-over format, as South Africa reached 365 for 9. Miller struck 12 fours and 9 sixes, while Bavuma smashed 10 fours and two sixes.

Australia’s Jack Edwards, who was competing in his second ODI, took five wickets for 67 runs, while Josh Hazlewood claimed 3 scalps from his 10 overs.

Australia won the toss and invited the Proteas to bat first for the second time but fell short and were bowled out for 333 in the 50th over.

There was some disagreement between South Africa skipper Bavuma and the wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. The incident happened in the 48th over of Australia’s run chase when the captain decided to take a DRS against  Xavier Bartlett. Bavuma said something to Quinton after taking a review.

De Kock didn’t like the gesture of his captain and hit back. Marco Jansen and Miller were seen smiling.

The second game was the annual Pink Day fixture, which is played to raise money for cancer research and treatment. Miller wore a jersey with his mother’s name, Jenny, on it. She is a breast cancer survivor.

Australia, who have won the ODI World Cup six times, haven’t been successful in a fifty-over bilateral assignment against South Africa since 2014. The visiting team would look to win the final game on Wednesday.

“Another good all-round team performance,” Bavuma said.

“Unbelievable innings by David and then the bowlers as well. There was a lot more spin than was expected. The way the spin complemented our attack was great.”

Australia lost the series opener by 67 runs in Durban and a better performance was expected from the Men in Yellow in the second ODI.  Mitchell Marsh (84) and Travis Head (84) were superb with the bat and added 130 runs in 17 overs before Australia failed to get past Keshav Maharaj (2/54) and Aiden Markram (1/55).

Maharaj dismissed Alex Carey (17) and Matt Renshaw (32).

“Really disappointing,” Marsh said. “Fair play to South Africa. I thought they played really well and outplayed us again. We haven’t been able to execute in those middle phases, which is a great learning curve for our players.”

Bartlett scored 50 runs off 28 balls, but it went in vain as Australia lost the plot after the dismissal of their opening batters.

Australia were without Josh Inglis, who was ruled out of the series with a fractured finger. Nathan Ellis also left the field after bowling just four overs due to a side strain.
