Indian cricket is set for a huge change behind the scenes as Ajit Agarkar is set to make his exit as the chairman of selectors. The 48-year-old took over the job in 2023 and was eligible for an extension, but he chose to walk away from the job. It was reported that Ajit wasn’t happy with the board backing Rohit Sharma after the retirement row that happened in England.

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar opined on the matter.

“There is, of course, the honour of being the chairman of the national selection committee, but it also comes with a target mark on the back. Like with umpiring, wicketkeeping and now, commentary, the nine good things that have been done will be forgotten and the one so-called error will be magnified a hundred times and discussed over and over again,” he wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

He also wrote that the man who will replace Agarkar is bound to be called out for his mistakes, but all the right calls he makes will be forgotten.

“Whoever is going to be the next chairman and how great or popular a player he may have been during his playing days, when he has to hang up his boots after his term, he will find there are more minuses than plusses against his name.”

The outgoing chairman of selectors has a good record in the white-ball formats, but the team’s performance in Test cricket has been abysmal. His tenure also saw Ravichandran Ashwin call time on his career in international cricket. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli also quit the T20Is and Test format.

Ahead of the 2025 Australia tour, both batters were termed non-committal as far as the 2027 WC is concerned.

Plenty of questions faced by Ajit Agarkar

Agarkar was slammed when he sacked Suryakumar Yadav from T20I captaincy and also dropped him from the side.

 Many have also questioned the former India pacer over the continued snub of Mohammed Shami despite the pacer doing well in domestic cricket.

Ex-Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel is the top contender to replace Agarkar. The BCCI hasn’t finalised any name, and the decision will be taken after October 4.
