India captain Shubman Gill on Friday suffered an injury scare when Mohammed Siraj’s delivery hit him on the elbow during a practice session. Gill was in pain and was given medical attention. The right-handed batter returned to the nets to face throwdowns before the conclusion of the session.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the two veterans, batted together at adjacent nets. The two greats looked in good touch and batted comfortably against Indian bowlers.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel was excited to see the talented players and the conversation among the players in the dressing room.

“Shubman Gill is an exceptional captain and has led the side well. The senior players play a big role in shaping the team. I think players are more comfortable speaking to seniors.

“We have a lot of experience in the dressing room, and the players are involved in conversations. It is great for the team, and we are fortunate that we have seniors,” he said.

Morkel mentioned that the team management is thinking about giving opportunities to the young members of the squad.

“We want the guys to have conversations with the senior players. We make sure senior guys speak and share their experience in the team meetings. The challenge is to ask a young player during the net session to talk to Rohit about the ways to face the new ball.

“The more opportunities we can create for conversations between the set of players, the better it is for us,” he added.

Meanwhile, the West Indies players landed in the city on September 23, but they haven’t trained. Another crisis has hit West Indies cricket after the governing body of cricket announced a 25 percent pay cut in retainer fees for financial restructuring.

The international players will retain their 12-month contracts, but the retainers of the domestic players have been reduced to seven months.

“We appreciate the spirit of cooperation shown by the West Indies Players’ Association and the players, who have demonstrated their understanding of the circumstances we all face,” CWI chief executive Chris Dehring said in a statement.

“While not ideal, it is a necessary step towards financial stability,” he added.
