Delhi: Former Sri Lankan captain Ranjan Madugalle has appealed to the young players to take the field with passion and full commitment while playing for the national team. He said that representing his country is one of the biggest honors for any cricketer.

Tamil union players honored

Madugalle was speaking at a felicitation ceremony held at the Oval. In this program, players and coaching staff of Tamil Union Cricket Club were honored for winning the domestic T20 competition.

The team won the title by defeating SSC in the final.

Madugalle said that four players of the team have been selected in the Sri Lankan team for the Asian Games to be held in Japan. He advised the players to take the opportunity to wear the national team jersey very seriously and perform with full dedication.

Special memories to Oval

During his address, Madugalle also shared old memories to P. Sara Oval. He told that he had come here for the first time in his childhood to watch the Royal-Thomian match.

Later, he took part in the test match for Sri Lanka on the same ground. He described Sri Lanka's historic Test victory against India in 1985 as his most memorable moment associated with this ground.

Four players got a chance in the national team

Four players, Tharindu Ratnayake, Vijayakanth Viakanth, Binura Fernando and Sineth Jayawardene, who have performed brilliantly for Tamil Union in this T20 season, have been selected in the Sri Lankan team for the Asian Games. Tamil Union won nine consecutive matches in the competition and won the title under the captaincy of Minod Bhanuka.

Club patron Chandra Shafter also gave individual prize money of 15 lakh Sri Lankan rupees to the players.

Who is Ranjan Madugalle?

It is noteworthy that Ranjan Madugalle represented Sri Lanka in international cricket from 1979 to 1988. He was a member of Sri Lanka's first Test team in 1982 and was the team's top scorer by scoring 65 runs in the country's first Test match. He played 21 Test and 63 ODI matches in his international career. Apart from this, he also captained Sri Lanka in 2 Test and 13 ODI matches.
