Sri Lanka put on a sparkling all-round show to beat England by 16 runs in a high-scoring second ODI at Headingley in Leeds on Thursday. Kusal Mendis' dazzling century and wonderful death bowling saw off the visitors and level the three-match series 1-1.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first and posted 321/6 from their 50 overs. Kusal Mendis smashed out 121 from 100 balls, with 14 fours and 3 sixes, while Kamindu Mendis remained calm and posted 54 from 65 balls.

Sri Lanka spinner Pavan Rathnayake took 3/37 as the home side put early pressure on England in the fifth match of the three-match ODI series.

Pathum Nissanka scored briskly 25 from 33 balls with 3 fours and a six as he and Kamindu put on a 45-run opening stand. Kamindu then joined the innings with Kusal and they both put on a crucial 137-run stand for the second wicket.

The 6th century by Kusal was also special as he touched the 5,000 ODI runs landmark. The Lankan opener has so far scored 5,125 runs in 158 ODIs and 154 innings at an average of 36.34, with 7 centuries and 36 fifties.

Meanwhile, Pavan added 39-ball 48 to his name with two fours and a six, while Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 32 from 26 balls.

England fall short chasing 322 as Banton, Duckett and Buttler all fall

Despite a blistering start by the openers, England could only make 305/9 in the allotted 50 overs in the rain-affected match. Tom Banton and Ben Duckett started in style and put on a 143-run partnership for the first wicket. Banton remained the aggressor as he hammered 73 from 62 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes, while Duckett remained steady at the other end and was unbeaten on 67 from 63 with 9 boundaries.

However, England soon found themselves sliding to 157/3 before a 46-run partnership between Joe Root and Jos Buttler helped the visitors get past the 200-run mark. Buttler remained the aggressor as he launched a rapid 69 from 49 balls, with 5 fours and 5 sixes, while Will Jacks remained on 52 from 61 deliveries with 4 boundaries and 2 sixes.

But Sri Lanka remained firm at the death as Dilshan Madushanka and Eshan Malinga both picked up two wickets apiece to restrict England to 305/9 after 50 overs, falling 16 runs short of the target.
