The South African pacer Kwena Maphaka has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia with a right hamstring strain.

He will be joining South Africa’s long injury list, with Kagiso Rabada, Ottneil Baartman, and Lungi Ngidi on the injured list. Meanwhile, Lizaad Williams has been brought in as a replacement for the fast bowler.

While Rabada’s injury had ruled him out before the selection for the series, Baartman and Lungi Ngidi were ruled out after naming the 16-member squad. They were replaced by Duan Jansen and Nqobani Mokoena, respectively.

Nandre Burger has been managing a back issue, and Lutho Sipamla is another fast bowler affected by injury.

South Africa’s fast bowling looks inexperienced due to a long list of injury concerns. Their options for the series heavily depend on all-rounders Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch, along with Gerald Coetzee.

“The seamer sustained the injury during training in preparation for the series and will undergo assessments to determine the extent of the injury. Boland paceman Lizaad Williams has been named as his replacement and will join the squad today,” said CSA in a statement.

The injuries have also raised concerns for South African team management ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia, starting on October 09.

The three-match ODI series will take place in Durban, Johannesburg and Potchefstroom on September 24, 27 and 30 respectively.

Following a white-ball leg, Australia will play a two-day tour match against a South Africa XI on October 03 and 04 before the first Test begins in Durban on October 09.

The second Test will be played in Gqeberha from October 18, with the series finale in Cape Town beginning on October 27.
