India’s preparations for its first-ever T20I against Japan were dampened on Monday, with the pre-match practice session at Sano called off due to rain.

Typhoon Dujuan, the year’s 25th, was expected to pass near the Boso Peninsula east of Tokyo through Monday evening, with up to 300 mm of rain forecast for the Kanto region in the 24 hours to Tuesday morning. The system was expected to weaken into an extratropical cyclone by September 22.

Match-day forecasts are cautiously optimistic. Overcast skies are predicted, with a 25-35 per cent chance of rain through the day.

The match starts at 1 pm local time (9:30 am IST). Still, Japan’s T20I against Hong Kong at the same venue was abandoned without a ball bowled, and a saturated outfield could delay the toss.

There is no reserve day, and if overs are lost the DLS method will set a revised target, provided the minimum overs are bowled.

Both teams head to Nagoya for the Asian Games soon after.
