When former India pacer Ajit Agarkar took charge as the chairman of the senior men's selection committee in July 2023, he had a highly motivated squad looking to re-establish its global dominance. In his tenure as the head of the selectors, the 48-year-old has overseen India achieve a T20 World Cup double and even win the Champions Trophy.

The captaincy has not been easy as he guided the team through some difficult phases. While India was on a roll in the limited-overs formats, the red-ball side was going through an incredibly turbulent period.

The selectors have faced multiple controversies as they dealt with the agonizing home Test series whitewashes against New Zealand (3-0) and South Africa (2-0).

Rumors surrounding Agarkar's exit had been circulating for quite some time, especially after he missed a review meeting that was to discuss the Indian team's performances in Ireland and England. Reports in Dainik Jagran claimed that there has been unrest between the board and selection panel about how to deal with veteran skipper Rohit Sharma's participation in the England tour.

When the news broke out that the Lord's ODI could possibly be Rohit Sharma's swan song, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia responded to the speculation, brushing it off with no consultation with the selection panel. While Rohit silenced his critics with a stunning century in the following match, reports revealed there was discontent brewing in the camp as the selectors felt there was more to come from the older opener and the 2027 ODI World Cup would need a new face.

With Agarkar's tenure set to end on October 4, reports from The Hindu claim that he has already informed the board that he is not inclined to extend his stay.

When asked about the same at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting, secretary Devajit Saikia responded,

“We still have 15 days to go. Fifteen days is a long time in the world of cricket. We have time. We will make a decision and, at the appropriate time, we will let you know.”

The office-bearers are already authorized to handle the incoming changes, and the cricket fraternity waits with bated breath to witness the developments.

What's in Store for Parthiv Patel?

While Parthiv Patel, the former India wicketkeeper batsman, has emerged as a hot favorite to fill in the shoes of the new head, an immediate intimation does not seem likely.

The BCCI will have to follow their usual procedure and release an advertisement before a round of interviews gets organised.

Meanwhile, former left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha is expected to step in on a temporary basis. With Agarkar leaving, Ojha, who currently has the distinction of playing the highest number of Test matches (24) among the rest of the current selection panel, will be waiting in the wings to take on more responsibilities. With Indian cricket on the verge of another transition, the upcoming appointment will decide what lies in wait for the next cycle.
