Former England spinner Monty Panesar mentioned that India’s 15-year-old player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi won’t succeed in Test cricket, saying three-format players have become rare.

The southpaw is India’s youngest debutant and is considered the next future star. He hasn’t played ODIs and red-ball cricket for the national team and is still learning about the game in domestic cricket.

Vaibhav wants to play the longest format of the game and expressed his desire to wear whites in the future.

He has been sensational in the shortest format but needs to improve in the fifty-over cricket and five-day games.

“I can’t see Sooryavanshi achieving success in Test cricket. Harry Brook is the only cricketer in the world who is among the top 10 batters in Test cricket and T20Is. Sooryavanshi lacks the technique to dominate bowlers in Test matches,” Panesar said on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast with Australian legend Michael Clarke.

Clarke mentioned that players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can play all formats if they are ready to work hard.

“I think they can play all the formats. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are the prime examples. These guys were magnificent in Test cricket and unbelievable T20 cricketers as well. If a player from the current generation like Sooryavanshi can make the transition into Test cricket, it is going to be exciting,” Clarke said.

The Aussie legend sounds optimistic about Vaibhav’s chances of playing the traditional format.

“He has a power game and has an amazing eye. He picks the ball early as any young cricketer. His technique will improve as he plays more cricket and travels to different countries with India.

There is no doubt that he is talented, and if he wants to achieve great things in Test cricket, I can’t see any reasons why he can’t be the next superstar across formats,” Clarke added.

Sooryavanshi was part of East Zone’s Duleep Trophy 2026 winning campaign and played a few good knocks. The young batter will now be seen in action in the Asian Games 2026.
