Bahutule, aged 51, will temporarily fill this role for six limited-over matches, which include three ODIs and three T20Is.
Bahutule's coaching journey includes stints with Kerala and Bengal during the 2014-15 season. He later became the spin bowling coach for Rajasthan Royals before moving on to coach Gujarat at the domestic level.
Additionally, he was the bowling coach for India A during their tour of South Africa in 2021.
Now the former India spinner will again be part of the Indian team in Sri Lanka, which includes players such as Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav across the formats. Bahutule has been known for his bowling brilliance in domestic cricket, where he picked up 630 wickets.
The 51-year-old also represented India, playing 2 Tests and 8 ODIs where he picked up 5 wickets.
In Sri Lanka, Bahutule will team up with Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, who are appointed as assistant coaches under Gautam Gambhir.
T Dilip, who previously served as India's fielding coach under Rahul Dravid, will also be part of the coaching staff.
As per reports, Morne Morkel will be taking up the Bowling coach role but the Sri Lanka series was too early for him.
