Paris Olympics 2024 Indian K9 squad on duty at Paris Games

Five-year-old Vast and three-year-old Denby have also been included in the security squad.

Paris Olympics 2024: The Olympic Games are going to be held in Paris from July 26. Which will run till August 11. About 10,500 athletes will be a part of the Paris Games.

In such a situation, strict measures are being taken for their security.

Five-year-old Vast and three-year-old Danby have also been included in the security squad. Both these Belgian Malinois are part of CRPF's K9 'Soldiers'. It includes 10 dogs and their handlers.

The 10 dogs drawn from various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) including CRPF, NSG, SSB, ITBP will be in Paris for a month till August 11, where they will carry out sniffing and patrolling under the overall supervision of French authorities who will handle the security of all Olympic venues and events.

The K9 Squad has been deployed for Olympic duty at the request of the French Government. This is the first international deployment of an Indian K9 Squad drawn from the CAPF for purposes other than disaster relief.

The dogs for the Paris Olympics were also given special training for foreign missions, just like Vast and Danby. Their trainers are also said to have been given a basic introduction to the French language.

A senior CRPF official said, “Wast and Danby were trained at the CRPF Dog Breeding and Training School at Taralu near Bengaluru. They were also trained for sniffing and search operations.”

The K9 squad was given a warm welcome in Paris by Javed Ashraf, Indian Ambassador to France and Monaco, who posted a photo of their meeting, writing: “Proud to meet the 10-member K9 Squad from India on a month-long visit to Paris to support security for the #ParisOlympics2024. Our K9 stars and handlers are doing well after their journey from India; will be back on duty soon for National Day”. He remarked that he also got a good handshake from the CAPF canine soldiers.

Belgian Shepherd Malinois dogs are known for their agility, strength and stamina, and are valued as police dogs for their dexterity, intelligence and eagerness to please.

They were instrumental in tracking down al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden's hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan, before he was killed by US Navy SEALs and also pursued IS chief Abu Bakr Baghdadi into a tunnel in Idlib, before he was killed.
