West Indies coach urges team to emulate comeback victory over Australia in Nottingham test

West Indies coach Andre Coley has pushed his team to channel the perseverance they displayed in their upset victory over Australia at the Gabba earlier this year. After suffering a heavy defeat against England in the first Test at Lord’s, Coley believes his side can draw inspiration from that experience against England and bounce back in Nottingham.

“The team likely found several positives to take away from the Gabba Test. The team’s resilience in bouncing back was more powerful than the win itself,” Coley quoted ahead of West Indies‘ second test against England.

Coley stressed the value of maintaining composure and resilience throughout a series, noting that a slow start need not prevent a competitive finish.

“It proves that even if you don’t start well, you can regroup, make a comeback, and become quite competitive – potentially setting up a decisive third game. There are real positives to take away, not just from the first Test, but also from the challenges faced over the past six months,” he stated.

“We need to bring more intensity to the field in the next Test match. In the Lord’s Test, we failed to impose ourselves effectively on the England batters.

Improving our ability to dominate the opposition is a key priority heading into the next match,” he added.

The West Indies, currently sixth in the World Test Championship standings, need strong performances in their final two matches in England to stay in contention. Despite their loss at Lord’s, Coley asserts that morale remains high, and he anticipates the squad will adapt better to English conditions going forward.

“After two weeks of acclimating to the conditions and getting time in the middle, the result was not what we wanted and planned for.

However, I believe there are valuable lessons and takeaways to be gained from this experience. The team is in high spirits as we’ve been meeting with the players individually. This will be the first time we’re all together as a united squad,” he noted.
