In 17 seasons of IPL, RCB has reached the final three times, but failed to cross the final hurdle despite having some of the top T20 talents in the team over the years like Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, who still remains part of the side.
Although the franchise started off their journey in the lucrative league with a squad dubbed "the Test team", RCB has since added some of the marquee names to have played in the format.
However, they still haven't managed to win the title.
Now, former player Patel, who spent four years at the franchise, has revealed the possible reason for the team's failure to go all the way. During a chat on Cyrus Says podcast, Patel shared his experiences with the RCB.
The 39-year-old said the franchise always focused on individual players rather than functioning as a team, highlightling how the spotlight was always on star players like Kohli, De Villiers, and Gayle during his stint in the Bengaluru-based side.
"I played for RCB, I've have been there for 4 years.
The team is always about individuals it's not about the Team. And then everyone will come out of that team will say that. Because it was all about Kohli, ABD, and Gayle when I was in the Team," Patel said on the podcast.
"So they were given the kind of special preference always so there the team culture was not there you can see clearly when they are playing, and that is the reason why they haven't won the trophies.
That's the fact."
Gayle, who was inducted into the RCB Hall of Fame in 2023 along with De Villiers, had also said something similar about the three big name players always getting more attention than the rest of the squad at the franchise.
"You know sometimes being one of the main players, the main man. I am always in my own zone. What I understand when it comes from an RCB point of view, a lot of players felt left out," Gayle had said on JioCinema ahead of the IPL in 2023.
"A lot of players didn't feel like they are part of the franchise. It was only three players getting all the attention, myself, Virat and AB.
So a lot of players pretty much mentally are nowhere within the team. So that's always going to be a challenge to win a title."
The same trend may still have been in play during the last few seasons with Kohli, Faf Du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell taking on the big three role in the squad. It will be interesting to see if that culture changes from the coming season with the IPL Mega Auction set to take place in December 2024 or January 2025.
