Delhi Capitals have sacked head coach Ricky Ponting after he failed to win an IPL title. Ponting came on board in 2019 and the Capitals qualified for its maiden final in 2021, but the performance was not consistent. “The decision makers have informed Ricky that they aren’t happy with the performance of the franchise in the last seven years and they want to change the support staff. He won’t be a part of next IPL season,” a source close to DC management told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Those who are in charge of the team wanted Ponting to be more involved in the functioning of the franchise.
Sourav Ganguly, the director of DC, is the front runner to replace Ponting.
Praveen Amre will continue as the assistant coach. The co-owners JSW and GMR group will meet meet to discuss the future strategy.
The retention of the players is another issue that will be discussed and if the number stays at four, then the Capitals will have to choose between Jake-Fraser and Tristan Stubbs for the overseas slot.
Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav will be retained.
