Australian speedster Mitchell Starc discussed Rohit Sharma‘s batting assault against him in the Super 8 match between India and Australia at the T20 World Cup 2024 . The star batter smashed 28 runs in the second over bowled by Starc.

The ‘Hitman’ began the over with a towering shot over deep extra cover, then followed it up by striking the second delivery in the same region. The 37-year-old batter continued his onslaught, smashing the bowler for a boundary and two sixes. Ultimately, the speedster leaked 29 runs, including a wide, and was the most expensive over of Starc’s T20I career.

In a Willow Talk podcast interview, Starc recounted how Sharma capitalized on the windy conditions to his advantage, dispatching all of his deliveries into the stands.

“I’ve faced him many times before. He performed exceptionally well in the tournament, particularly in our match. I believe he capitalized on the windy conditions in St. Lucia. Looking at the scores from each end, one end yielded significantly more runs than the other. I was bowling from that end, and I delivered five poor deliveries, all of which he dispatched for six runs,” noted Starc.

The left-arm seamer dismissed Indian captain Rohit Sharma with a brilliant yorker, finishing his spell with figures of 2/45 in four overs. Rohit scored a staggering 92 runs off just 41 balls, smashing seven fours and eight sixes. This was the second-highest individual score by an Indian player in T20 World Cup history, and also the second-highest by a captain in the tournament.

Powered by an explosive batting display, India posted a huge 205/5 in their 20 overs. Australia’s reply fell short at 181/7, handing India a 24-run victory. This defeat proved costly for the 2021 champions, as Afghanistan’s win over Bangladesh in the final Super 8 fixture eliminated Australia from the tournament.
