Sri Lanka cricket has endured a tough couple of months as it gets ready to face India later in the month. Currently, with an interim coach Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has now landed in a new controversy with reports of players having a "drinks party" during the T20 World Cup despite the horror show performance and exiting in the group stage after being handed a defeat by Bangladesh and a washout to Nepal.

What was the controversy? According to several media reports published on Sunday (July 7), few players in the team camp had a party despite the team being able to register only one win during the entire T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies. The media report claimed that at least five leading players, including three top-order batsmen, a veteran fast-bowler, and a world-renowned all-rounder, were involved in a late-night drinking session in one of the hotel rooms the night before the match. "SLC categorically and strongly refutes the contents of the article and confirms that no such incidents, as described, have occurred. Therefore, SLC states unequivocally that the news report is entirely false, fabricated, and baseless," a statement from the Sri Lanka Cricket Board read.   Sri Lanka's poor T20 World Cup Favourites to advance from their group, Sri Lanka delivered a poor performance and also witnessed weather issues during their matches. Sri Lanka lost to both Bangladesh and South Africa during the T20 World Cup group stage while their washout against minnows Nepal proved to be the final nail in the coffin as they only managed to gather three points. Their solitary victory came in the clash against the Netherlands where Wanindu Hasaranga's side registered an 83-run victory. The Lankan Lions will next take on India in a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series. The majority of the Indian senior players are expected to be rested for the T20I Series but according to reports they could be back for the ODI series with the board now eyeing success at the 2025 Champions Trophy.
