India set for selection headache with T20 World Cup-winning trio Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal linking up with the squad ahead of the 3rd T20I against Zimbabwe, scheduled to be held on Wednesday (July 10) in Harare.
Samson, Dube and Jaiswal, who were part of the original 15-member squad for the Zimbabwe tour, missed the first two matches after their arrival from Barbados was delayed and also due to the victorious team's post World Cup-win celebrations. BCCI had named B Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana as cover for the three players, who were slated to arrive in-time for the remainder of the five-match series.
Now, with the arrival, the think-tank faces a huge task of naming the playing 11 for the next match. India had suffered a surprise loss in the opening match, but bounced back in style in the 2nd T20I to level the series at 1-1. Team India led by Shubman Gill made only one change to their playing 11 from the team that had a batting collapse in the 1st T20I. Sai Sudharsan was handed a debut, replacing pacer Khaleel Ahmed.
The left-handed batter, however, did not get a chance to bat with the top four only doing the job for India. While Gill failed to impress, Abhishek Sharma, who failed in his debut, responded with a quickfire century. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 77 and Rinku Singh played an unbeaten 22-ball cameo for 48 runs. As the three of the top four performed, there is very little chance for any changes to be made in the top order. However, the wicketkeeping and pace-bowling all-rounder could come in handy, should India want to make any change to their winning combination. Will Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal play for India in 3rd T20I against Zimbabwe? Sai Sudharsan, who was in the squad as a replacement player, is unfortunately going to make way for one of the three players.
Samson could come in as either a wicketkeeper-batter replacement for Dhruv Jurel or come in to replace Sai Sudharsan as a pure batter. Jaiswal, however, may have to wait for his chance with two of three opening options already looking good, and the one that hasn't looked at his best is the captain of the teams. Following his maiden international century, Abhishek Sharma is likely to retain his spot for the immediate future.
Gaikwad also is unlikely to be axed after a fine fifty. Plus, Gill is undroppable as captain. So, Jaiswal may find a spot hard to come by in the series with a crowded top order. Dube, on the other hand, could be a useful option if his skill as all-rounder is fully utilized. With India going into the second T20I a bowler short, they could be tempted to use Dube's all-round ability on tracks which have assisted the pace bowlers. But the dilemma will be on who to drop to bring in Dube. It could either be Parag, who just got one opportunity to bat, making way or Jurel with Samson coming in as wicketkeeper-batter.
