Lahore, Jul 7: In a significant move to enhance cricket infrastructure, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has allocated approximately 17 billion rupees for the upgradation of stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.
The decision was made during the PCB's Board of Governors (BOG) meeting held on Saturday in Lahore. The substantial investment aims to prepare the venues for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, which is set to be hosted entirely in Pakistan. Major Investments and Upgrades The approved budget reflects the PCB's commitment to elevating the standards of its cricket venues. Out of the 17 billion rupees, nearly 13 billion will be directed from development funds towards the renovation and enhancement of the three major stadiums. An additional 4.5 billion rupees have been earmarked for organizing the domestic cricket season. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the importance of these upgrades, stating that the improvements are intended to provide better facilities for spectators and transform the venues into A-class stadiums. The upgradation work has already commenced, to complete the enhancements well before the Champions Trophy. Boost for Women's Cricket In a landmark decision for women's cricket in Pakistan, the PCB has allocated 240 million rupees to the women's cricket program, a significant increase from the 70 million rupees approved in the previous budget. This allocation is part of a broader effort to promote and develop women's cricket in the country. The increased funding will be used to improve the competition level and cricket structures, as well as to enhance the central contract fees and salaries for women cricketers and domestic players. This move is expected to bolster the growth of women's cricket and attract more talent to the sport. Upcoming Cricket Season The PCB's budget for 2024-25 has been approved with a comprehensive plan for the upcoming cricket season. Pakistan is set to host several international series, including matches against Bangladesh, England, and the West Indies, along with a tri-series before the Champions Trophy. Additionally, the Pakistan national team will tour Australia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Future Discussions and ICC Meeting Chairman Naqvi also informed the BOG members that the details of hosting the ICC Champions Trophy will be further discussed at the ICC's annual board meeting in Colombo later this month. The PCB is keen on ensuring that the tournament is a resounding success, showcasing Pakistan's capability to host major international cricket events.
