Delhi: India's legendary fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah dedicated the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 winner's medal and Player of the Tournament award to his mother Daljit. 30-year-old Bumrah played an important role in India's victorious journey, due to which he was named Player of the Tournament. He performed brilliantly in all the matches, dismissed the opposition batsmen and led India to victory.
In the final, when South Africa needed 30 runs from 30 balls, Bumrah changed the course of the match by giving only six runs in his last two overs. He took the crucial wicket of Marco Jansen (2 runs from 4 balls). With the combined efforts of Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, India defeated South Africa by 7 runs and won their second T20 World Cup title.
Dedicating his award to his mother, Bumrah shared a picture on Instagram in which he is seen hugging his mother. His mother is wearing the World Cup winner's medal and is also holding the Player of the Tournament award.
Superb performance by Bumrah
Notably, Bumrah has become the second Indian to win the prestigious award after Virat Kohli. Kohli had won the award in back-to-back editions in 2014 and 2016. Bumrah finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 15 wickets in eight innings at an average of 8.46 and an economy rate of 4.17.
Ahmedabad-born Bumrah recorded the lowest economy rate among bowlers who played at least five matches in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. His best performance was against Afghanistan, where he took 3 wickets for 7 runs in four overs.
At the start of the tournament, Bumrah took 2 wickets for 6 runs in 3 overs against Ireland and was named Player of the Match. After this, he took 3 wickets for 14 runs in four overs against Pakistan, which included the wickets of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed. Thanks to his performance, India defended their lowest T20 score of 119 runs and Bumrah was named Player of the Match.
After his stellar performance in the T20 World Cup, Bumrah has moved up 12 spots in the T20 bowlers' rankings to the 12th position.
