Rohit Sharma has joined the exclusive list of Indian captains by masterminding India‘s World Cup title triumph on June 29th. Virat Kohli‘s batting clinic and Jasprit Bumrah‘s death-over exploits secured a enticing seven-run win over South Africa in the final at the Kensington Oval. As Team India enjoyed a euphoric homecoming in Mumbai, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar highlighted the standout performer of the Men In Blue on the grandest stage.

Kohli saved his best performance for last, scoring a scintillating 76 against South Africa in his final T20I match. Pace ace Jasprit Bumrah complemented all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the death overs to set up India’s win. Bumrah was adjudged the Player of the Tournament, becoming the first pacer to receive the prestigious honor.

Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar lauded Bumrah for getting the ‘Player of the Tournament’, but named Rohit Sharma as the standout performer of the Indian team in the ICC event.

“Jasprit Bumrah absolutely deserved to be named ‘Player of the Tournament’, but the main driving force behind India’s dominant performance was Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Rohit’s leadership was exemplary, as he maintained his composure even in tense situations, never letting his body language falter. This team achieved success across a wide range of disciplines, cementing their status as champions in every field,” stated Gavaskar.

“While we’ve grown accustomed to his animated expressions, his leadership during India’s challenging moments deserves the highest praise. In my opinion, Rohit’s captaincy was the standout performance of the tournament,” he added.

Rohit Sharma is the second- oldest (37-year-old) captain to win an ICC tournament final. Pakistan’s Imran Khan lifted the 1992 World Cup trophy at 39. Rohit also extended his unparalleled T20 final record to 8-0 by securing India’s second T20 World Cup title. With 49 wins, Rohit has the most victories as a captain in men’s T20I history, and he is the only player to have won the T20 World Cup both as a player and a captain.
