India Blue finished third out of three teams and Gill could score only 15 runs in two innings. A few months later, Gill led India C in the 2019/20 Deodhar Trophy. Gill then became the youngest captain in the history of the tournament at the age of 20. He performed well with both the bat and the team in this tournament. India C team was the runner-up and Gill scored 145 runs in three matches.

He led India A in a four-day game against South Africa A in 2019. Earlier, he also captained Punjab in two matches during the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Punjab won both those matches.

Apart from this, Shubman Gill captained Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 but his team was eliminated from the league stage itself. Gujarat team won only 5 out of its 14 matches.

There was a lot of discussion on making Shubman Gill the captain and some were happy with this decision while some also objected. At the same time, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag also called Gill the right choice for captaincy after Rohit Sharma.
