After the completion of the three-year cycle, the IPL is set to undergo a mega auction again. The BCCI has initiated the process of finalising the retention policy, with a final decision expected to be announced at a meeting of the owners later this month.
The IPL franchises have requested an increase in the number of player retentions for the next three seasons. In 2021, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allowed franchises to retain a maximum of four players, with certain conditions regarding nationality. But as per reports, the norm may change for the upcoming year.
IPL 2025: How many Retentions ahead of Mega Auction?
The majority of the 10 franchises have asked for more retentions compared to the last allowance. Many teams went for the retention numbers from five to seven, while one franchise wanted to have eight retentions. On the other hand, a franchise also voted for no retentions at all. Additionally, there was a request to have only RTMs and no retentions allowed. The BCCI will disclose its decisions at the owners' meeting.
BCCI Acting CEO and IPL in-charge Hemang Amin has recently consulted the CEOs of the franchises to gather their views on the policy and salary cap for the next three years. A mega auction is scheduled for later this year, and opinions were also sought on the possible inclusion of Right To Match (RTM) cards, which were not used in 2021.
IPL 2025 Purse may increase significantly
Regarding the player purse, opinions have varied among CEOs of the teams. The prevailing view is that the salary cap could range between Rs 110-120 crore, but an increase of Rs 20 crore cannot be ruled out. Currently, the cap stands at Rs 100 crore.
Discussions have also touched on cricketing matters, particularly the Impact Player rule. While media rights holders are satisfied with it, feedback from the playing side hasn't been beaming on the rule. Several players spoke against the rule, including India captain Rohit Sharma.
