The Indian cricket team’s trip back from the West Indies may be delayed as they are stranded in Barbados due to hurricane Beryl, which has now strengthened to a “very dangerous Category 4.”.

All members of the delegation, including players and their families, support personnel, and administrators from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), are trapped at the Barbados beachfront property, and the team hotel’s amenities are also impacted.

“Services are impacted in the team hotel as well, just like everywhere else. Because of the highly severe storm, the airport is closed; thus, there is currently no clarification about departure. According to a source familiar with the situation, “The BCCI is coordinating to ensure the entire contingent reaches back home safely.”

Both locals and visitors are urged to stay inside as a result of the area’s hurricane warnings. More than 130 mph winds are expected to affect the area.

As it approached the Windward Islands on Sunday, Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, strengthened into a very hazardous Category 4 hurricane with gusts as high as 130 mph.

“Beryl is now the first Category 4 storm to ever be registered in the month of June and the earliest hurricane ever to be classified as a Category 4 in the Atlantic Ocean. CNN says that tropical storm-force winds are predicted to arrive in the Windward Islands by late Sunday or early Monday.

The Indian cricket board is now investigating the idea of organizing a direct charter flight for the team from Barbados to New Delhi; however, this would need the airport to reopen. Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, is with them at the team hotel, supervising the side’s plans.

The winning team intends to visit Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon their return to India, as CricketNext revealed yesterday. However, this will depend on when they are allowed to board their trip home.

Since Sunday was a reserve day for the 2024 T20 World Cup final and Monday was intended to be the departure day due to the storm, the squad was not allowed to fly.
