After leading India to victory in the World Cup in Barbados last week, Virat Kohli declared his retirement from the Twenty20 international format. With that, he ended an incredible career that had seen him amass 4188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04 across 125 matches.

For the majority of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was contested in the USA and the Caribbean Islands, Kohli found it difficult to score runs. But in the final, he rose to the occasion with a composed 76 off 59 balls, an innings that was constructed under duress after the South African bowlers had destroyed his side in the powerplay.

India achieved 176/7 thanks to the innings, which was sufficient to win them their second T20 World Championship. In addition to Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma disclosed to the media that he too participated in the last Twenty20 international match of his career.

It was also Rahul Dravid’s last game as head coach of India; he had already said he would leave the position after the World Cup.

The BCCI is expected to choose Dravid’s replacement shortly, and two-time World Cup champion Gautam Gambhir is the leading candidate to succeed him as head coach.

As the squad celebrated their victory in their dressing room at the Kensington Oval on Saturday, Dravid had a message for Kohli.

At the senior level, Kohli has now won all three of the main ICC trophies. This covers the Champions Trophy in 2013, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2011 ODI World Cup.

The World Test Championship, which Kohli came very close to winning twice in the past, is one ICC prize that is absent from his trophy case. India lost the championship finals against Australia (2023) and New Zealand (2021).

Now, Dravid is looking for Kohli to finish the set.

“One red ticked, three white ticked. In the brief video, Dravid can be heard encouraging Kohli, “Tick it!”

The first player in history to win all four ICC championships is Kohli. His first big break came in 2008 as he led India to victory in the U19 ODI World Cup.
