When India plays South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup final on Saturday, they will be looking to finally bring an ICC trophy home to break an 11-year championship drought. Rohit Sharma is India’s captain.
The teams are undefeated going into the championship game in Barbados, which could make for an exciting match.
For Rohit, who has already guided India to three ICC tournament finals, the final is his last chance. But the squad has suffered setback after set, falling short against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. India lost to England in the semi-final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in his debut game as captain of his country.
“I don’t think he can lose two World Cup finals in seven (six) months,” former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly told PTI, referring to Rohit’s last opportunity to win an ICC trophy in this format, the T20 World Cup final. If he loses two finals while serving as captain in the next seven months, he will most likely dive into the waters off Barbados.
“I hope he keeps leading from the front and batting superbly tomorrow. I hope India ends up on the right side, and they need to be allowed to play freely. They have been the opposition’s strongest team.
I hope they succeed and wish them luck. I hope they have a little bit of luck tomorrow, because winning major events requires that, Ganguly said.Notwithstanding these difficulties, Rohit has an incredible record in domestic cricket, having captained the Mumbai Indians to five IPL championships—more than any other captain in the league’s history. According to Ganguly, an IPL side has a greater chance of winning since they have to win more games than in an ICC competition.
“It is an incredible accomplishment for Rohit to hold the record of five IPL championships.
Sometimes it’s more tough to win an IPL. Don’t misquote me—I’m not arguing that the Indian Premier League is superior than international cricket. However, to win an IPL, you must win 16–17 (12–13) matches; to win a World Cup, you must win 8–9 matches. The World Cup victory carries more honor.
