According to a player study, the ODI World Cup is losing ground to the T20 World Cup in the competition for players’ attention as the “most important” ICC tournament worldwide.

In contrast to 15% who thought the T20 World Cup was more significant, 85% of players said the 50-over World Cup was the most significant event of 2019, according to a study done by the World Cricketers Association (WCA), previously known as FICA.

Those numbers have now shifted, with 50% of players ranking the ODI extravaganza as the most significant and 35% favoring its T20 counterpart in 2024.

The last match of the T20 World Cup, which is currently being hosted by the USA and the West Indies, will take place in Barbados on Saturday between South Africa and India.

According to the rebranded body’s study, players under 26 had a marked increase in preference for the T20 World Cup, with 41 percent saying they would rather compete in it than the 50-over World Cup in 2024.

All things considered, the T20 format’s popularity has increased significantly. Only 48% of players now cited Test cricket as the most significant format, down from 82% in 2019.

Up to 30% of the participants said that T20 was the most significant format.

Because they are not unionized, players from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India are among those who are not represented by the WCA.

Players from other prominent cricketing countries, such as Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Bangladesh, and the West Indies, were asked to respond.

About 330 professional players from 13 different nations made up the sample size for this year’s poll, according to the WCA, with the bulk of them being active internationals.

In 2024, the percentage of female responses is greater.
