Indian women's cricket team's opening batsman Shafali Verma created a world record by scoring a brilliant double century in the first innings on the first day of the only Test match being played against South Africa at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

20-year-old Shafali played a record-breaking innings of 205 runs in 197 balls with the help of 23 fours and 8 sixes. In this innings, she scored 140 runs only through boundaries. She returned to the pavilion after being run out.

Shefali completed her double century in 194 balls, which is the fastest double century in women's Test cricket.

She broke the record of Annabel Sutherland, who completed her double century in 248 balls against South Africa in 2024.

Shefali has become the second Indian woman cricketer to score a double century in Test cricket. Earlier, Mithali Raj had scored an unbeaten 214 runs in the match against England in Taunton in 2002.

Youngest to score 500 runs

Apart from this, she also completed her 500 runs in Tests, and she has become the youngest Indian player to reach this figure. Shefali has achieved this feat at the age of 20 years and 152 days. She left behind Sandhya Agarwal, who had completed 500 Test runs at the age of 21 years and 308 days.

It is worth noting that in this match, Shefali along with Smriti Mandhana (149 runs) made a partnership of 292 runs in 52 overs for the first wicket. This is the first time in the 90-year history of women's Test cricket that a partnership of 250 or more runs has been made for the first wicket.
