Captain of India Rohit Sharma believes that veteran batsman Virat Kohli’s form is not a “problem” and that he has the potential to play in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa.
Kohli has been looking to get runs with his bat during the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, after a successful stint with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The seasoned hitter has scored 75 runs at an average of 10.71 in seven games.
It seemed that the semi-final matchup with England provided him with the ideal opportunity to bounce back and regain his form before the championship game.He suggested a potential extended stay at the crease as he smoked the ball into the stand over mid-wicket. However, as the Indian attempted to scoop it towards the boundary, Kohli gave Reece Topley the opportunity to retaliate by clipping the leg stump.
The Indian captain isn’t concerned about Kohli’s form despite his lackluster season and believes his countryman will steal the show in the championship.
“Kohli is an excellent player. That may happen to any athlete. We recognize his quality and his significance in all of these major games. Form never poses an issue. Form is never an issue when you’ve played cricket for fifteen years. His aim is clear, he’s conserving for the final, and he looks terrific. “Yes (supporting Kohli for the championship match),” Rohit said at the post-game ceremony.
A haunting reminder of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, India won easily by 68 runs to go straight to the championship match.
The spin tandem of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav dominated the Three Lions, limiting them to 103 in 16.4 overs as they chased 172 runs.
Axar eliminated the initial order and took the lead with his powerful spell, 3/23. By thwarting the middle order and finishing with the figures of 3/19, Kuldeep provided the perfect backing.
Playing well against the undefeated Proteas is, in Rohit’s opinion, the key to winning the championship.
As a squad, we’ve been really composed. We recognize the moment as final. Making wise choices is aided by maintaining composure.
That will enable us to win the game. You must be a competent cricket player. In the end, we want to do that. All I can say is that we’ll give it our best shot. The squad is doing well and is in fantastic condition. Come finals, all I can aim for is to put on another fantastic performance,” Rohit said. The final will take place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday between South Africa and India.
