In their crucial ICC T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal match against England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday, Team India moved star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja up the order, eliciting a bewildered response from both spectators and commentators.
Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer for India and current analyst, expressed his shock at the reorganization on social networking site X, previously known as Twitter, with an update that said, “Jadeja over Dube or even Axar???”
Due to bad weather in the Caribbean, the second semifinal of the event was postponed for more than an hour. English captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bat first for India.
Together with ace batsman Virat Kohli, Indian captain Rohit Sharma started the inning. However, Kohli was unable to shake off his poor performance in the current ICC extravaganza, as he was bowled out by Reece Topley after scoring only 9 runs.
Coming to bat at number three, Rishabh Pant was again removed cheaply by Sam Curran, who sent him back to the dugout for four runs as Jonny Bairstow clung to the cathing chance presented by the southpaw.
Before the skipper was removed by Adil Rashid, Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav set up a 73-run partnership, but only after the opener had reached his half-century.
When Jordan caught Suryakumar deep off a ball from Jofra Archer, he missed his half-century by three runs. India then chose to send Jadeja to the middle before Axar Patel and Shivam Dube.
Before being dismissed by Jordan, who also removed Dube for a golden duck on the following ball after Buttler caught him behind the wickets, Hardik Pandya contributed 23 runs off 13 deliveries.
Nevertheless, Jadeja played some excellent cricket, scoring 17 runs in only 9 deliveries to help India to a 20-over total of 171 runs. Axar and Arshdeep Singh both contributed 10 runs each.
