Afghanistan was bowled out for only 56 runs in the first semifinal of the 2017 ICC T20 World Cup in Tarouba on Thursday after being completely destroyed by blistering spells from South African pacers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen.

Afghanistan’s lack of experience in important matches was evident, as they looked completely lost against more seasoned Proteas bowlers.

Afghanistan chose to bat first and got off to a bad start when bowler Marco Jansen took the major wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who was top-scoring in the competition, with a brilliant catch at slips from Reeza Hendricks. Gurbaz was out for a three-ball duck, and after one over, Afghanistan was 4/1.

Gulbadin Naib struck two elegant boundaries to try to take down the speedster, but the Proteas kept up their brutal bowling. A delivery from Jansen slammed into his off stump, taking him for nine runs in eight balls. The Afghan score in 2.3 overs was 16/2.

In addition to joining the feast, Kagiso Rabada took advantage of the Afghan batsmen’s bat and pad gap to castle veteran all-rounders Mohammed Nabi (0) and Ibrahim Zadran (2).

Afghanistan was 20/4 in 3.4 overs, collapsing like a pack of cards.

Quinton de Kock, the wicketkeeper-batter, caught Nangeyalia Kharote behind for only two runs in seven balls, making her Jansen’s third victim. In five overs, Afghanistan was 23/5 and Proteas were blazing.

Afghanistan was 28/5 after six overs, with Azmatullah Omarzai and Karim Janat (0*).

(10*) unsullied.

The Proteas pacers were unstoppable, as Omarzai gave Tristan Stubbs at sweeper cover an easy catch on an Anrich Nortje delivery.

After 6.3 overs, Afghanistan was 29/6.

Afghans were somewhat relieved from the assault of South African pacers by their captains, Rashid Khan and Karim, who each hit Rabada for two fours and some spin.

In 9.2 overs, Afghanistan hit the fifty-run milestone.

Karim was caught leg-before-wicket by Shamsi for only eight runs in 13 balls, bringing an end to their short 21-run partnership. Afghanistan finished 9.3 overs at 50/7.

In the same over, Shamsi also dismissed Noor Ahmed for a duck.

The Afghan score in 9.5 overs was 50/8.

Nortje shut out Rashid for just eight runs. Afghanistan finished 10.2 overs at 50/9.

With only two runs needed to remove Naveen ul Haq, Shamsi claimed the last wicket. In 11.5 overs, Afghanistan was bowled out for 56.

The two best bowlers for South Africa were Jansen (3/16) and Shamsi (3/6). Nortje (2/7) and Rabada (2/14) both bowled effectively for South Africa.
