In their 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final matchup against South Africa at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on Thursday, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and chose to bat first.
Both sides haven’t changed from their previous games, and the Afghans are relieved that crucial opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz has sufficiently recovered from a leg injury to play in the thrilling last minutes of their narrow victory over Bangladesh on Monday night in St. Vincent, earning them a spot in their first senior World Cup semifinal.
Half of the Afghanistan team was ordered back into the dugout by the Proteas after the powerplay overs, which lasted for six overs.
Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen split the wickets between them.
THIS IS HOW THE WICKETS IN AFGHANISTAN FELL:
0.6: Rahmanullah Gurbaz to Marco Jansen: OUT! In the first over itself, Jansen strikes, as the dangerous Gurbaz is bowled out cheaply! As the batsman steps forward to smash the ball over the covers, he bowls a true half-volley on a longer length. However, he pushes hard and plays it inside the line, and the ball takes a thick outside edge that travels straight to Reeza Hendricks, who is positioned at the second slip.
2.3: Gulbadin Naib to Marco Jansen: OUT! KOWLED! From beyond the stumps, Jansen puts it on a length, barely around off, and the ball slides before racing through to the hitter. As he attempts to play over the line of the ball, Naib is caught off guard and becomes stuck on the crease. The delivery shakes the stumps and beats the inside edge.
3.1 Ibrahim Zadran to Kagiso Rabada: OUT! Rabada gets off to a perfect start, landing the ball in the center and leg at a decent length. Zadran plays the delivery all over the line, jumping on the back foot and creating a large space between the bat and the pad. The delivery jags back a little. The ball enters the stumps after slipping past the defense.
3.4: Muhammad Nabi to Kagiso Rabada: OUT! It’s Rabada’s second wicket now. With more length and an angle on the stumps from the channel of off, he bowls it at 142 kph. Nabi moves forward to stop it, but he plays it past the ball’s line after seeing the movement too late. The ball enters the stumps after slipping past the pad and the bat.
4.6: Nangeyalia Kharote to Marco Jansen: OUT! When he delivers it short and angles it down the leg side, Jansen takes his third wicket. Kharote stays still and tries to drag it away, but the ball is too near to play that shot, and he misses the mark. Quinton de Kock runs to his right and makes a brilliant catch as the ball brushes off his glove and travels behind the stumps.
