In the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024, Afghanistan beat South Africa by nine wickets on Thursday, June 27, at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. In his first over, Afghanistan’s left-arm bowler dismissed Quinton de Kock, the Proteas opener, and went on to become the top wicket-taker in the history of the T20 World Cup.
Farooqi broke the record held by Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for most wickets in a single T20 World Cup. Hasaranga finished with 16 wickets in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Farooqi is currently leading the T20 World Cup with 17 wickets. He got five wickets against Uganda to open his T20 World Cup campaign, and he claimed four wickets against New Zealand as Afghanistan created history by beating the Kiwis in T20 Internationals for the first time. In a crucial encounter against India, he also claimed three wickets. Farooqi had an influence on every game, particularly during the powerplay when the new ball was used.

South Africa advanced to the final of the T20 World Cup
By making it to the T20 World Cup final for the first time ever, Proteas have written history. Afghanistan lost against them by nine wickets. The 9th over saw South Africa attempt to chase the score. South Africa easily chased down the mark thanks to undefeated 29 runs in 25 balls from Reeza Hendricks and 23 runs from captain Aiden Markaram.
Earlier, bowlers from South Africa dismissed Afghanistan for a mere 56 runs. Their middle and top order was unable to produce any runs. In the encounter, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje each claimed two wickets, while Tabraiz Shamsi and Marco Jansen shared three wickets each.
