The Hitman's sensational innings of 92 off just 41 deliveries powered India to a formidable total of 205/5 after being put into bat first on Monday (June 24).
India vs England Semi-Final Again
The high-stakes match saw India dominate from the start, with the right-handed top-order batter's aggressive approach setting the tone.
His innings included a barrage of boundaries and sixes, dismantling a renowned Australian bowling attack and creating new records in the process. Rohit's knock earned him the Player of the Match award.
Australia, led by Mitchell Marsh, fought valiantly but could only manage 181/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite efforts from Travis Head - who scored a 43-ball 76, the Australian side was unable to chase down the imposing target. India's bowlers, supported by good fielding in the second half of the innings, secured a comprehensive win.
With this victory, India topped Group 1 and set up a semi-final clash with defending champions England.
This upcoming match brings back memories of the 2022 semi-final in Australia, where India faced a crushing 10-wicket defeat against Jos Buttler-led English side, who eventually won the tournament. However, Rohit Sharma expressed confidence in his team's current form and strategy.
Reflecting on the victory against Australia, the Mumbaikar noted the significance of overcoming a team that had defeated India in both the WTC 2023 Final and the ODI World Cup 2023 final at home.
"This win gives us a lot of confidence," he remarked, emphasising the importance of maintaining consistency and playing with freedom.
When asked about their approach for the second semi-final on May 27 in Guyana, the 37-year-old cricketer was clear in his strategy. "We don't want to do anything different, play the same way and understand what each person has to do. Play freely and not think too much about what's lying ahead. Not think about the opposition. We have been doing it consistently, just need to continue," Rohit stated.
Regarding the prospect of facing England, Rohit remained composed and focused.
"It will be a nice match, nothing changes for us as a team," he added, underlining the importance of sticking to their game plan.
Rohit and his spirited band - who are unbeaten so far in the competition - appear a much-balanced side (than they were in the last edition) heading into the semi-final in this edition. Jasprit Bumrah - who didn't feature in the last edition due to injury - has been the best in the business so far.
Although England suffered defeats at the hands of Australia in the group stage and South Africa in the Super 8, but the men in red produced a clinical show against the USA to secure the semi-final berth and returned to form.
Team India will have to be at the peak of their game against a quality English side, who will not give them an opportunity for a comeback.
As India gears up for the crucial semi-final, fans and cricket pundits alike are eager to see if Rohit's leadership and the team's form can carry them to the final and possibly, a tournament victory. The clash against England promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams showcasing exceptional talent and determination.
